Overview
Spain is most easily accessed by air for international visitors, with an extensive array of low-cost international flights to destinations across Spain from most European countries. Spain can also be reached by sea, with ferry services to the U.K and North Africa from most major coastal cities. International rail services exist between major Spanish cities and France, Portugal and further afield.
Once you arrive in Spain, you’ll find a superb range of transport options available. These include high speed rail services, long distance bus services and excellent road networks. Most major cities feature metro, bus and tram services, permitting effortless access to most major tourist attractions.
Getting to Spain
Air
Barcelona El Prat Airport is the second most important in Spain in volume of passengers. Located 12 kilometres to the southwest of the Catalan capital, Barcelona’s airport offers daily flights to and from the main Spanish destinations, particularly the Madrid-Barcelona air shuttle service, which has flights every 30 minutes between the two cities. Paris, Bordeaux, Milan and Rome are just some of the international destinations available from Barcelona. Madrid’s airport is just 13 kilometres from the city centre. Barajas Airport, in Madrid, is Spain’s busiest airport and in Europe’s top five. It features flights to destinations across Europe, North America and Latin America, with Iberia, Easyjet, British Airways and Ryanair all serving the Spanish capital. Regular ferry services are run by P&O from Portsmouth to Bilbao (thrice a week) and from Plymouth and Southampton to Santander (once a week).
